Think about this again.
I am 65 years old,
In my lifetime, I remember, if we wanted to communicate officially with someone a distance away, we had 2 choices.
-
We could try and research from some determined source, a telephone number, and pay a long distance telephone charges to attempt to contact someone. If we did connect, the longer the telephone call, the more money it would cost us. Yes, it was convenient, but it sure made an 18 cent stamp look very affordable, and the best choice for communication.
-
As just mentioned, we could write this person a letter, or type it. It would then go into an envelope, and mailed. If it was a distance away, it could take up to a week to make the journey. Then, we had to wait for a response. If we included our telephone number, we then waited for a phone call. If the telephone rang, and it was the party we sent the letter to, we felt like we had won a small challenge. Not to mention, we were not paying for the phone call either!
Why did I just mention that? Especially when we are addressing a work-life balance?
Because today, we are drowning in information. We can have almost anything we want in a matter of minutes. Even if we can not afford to pay for something, there are almost unlimited ways to still attain it.
If we need knowledge on something it is as easy as pushing a button on our smart phone and asking a question. Multiple and varied answers follow. 40 years ago we had to go to a library. If we wanted to research something, we needed books.
Our society today is all about instant gratification.
Today, if we have to wait over 4 seconds for a viewing screen, aka, webpage to load, we almost have a meltdown.
Almost everyone has a mobile phone. Almost everyone. Children too!
Drive down the street and watch the people waiting for a bus, or just sitting on a bench. What are most of them doing? Looking at their mobile phones! I do it to. If we don’t have our smart phones, we are lost, absolutely and virtually lost!
With just the above mentioned thoughts and topics, how could we be responsible for having any type of sane lifestyle? How does anyone find peace in this torrential technical worldwide lifestyle?
Now lets talk about the work environment. It makes our private lives look like we live on a deserted island.
Work days are actual contests. Especially if you are in the sales environment.
We are competing not only against our competitors, but we are constantly getting judged and graded against our peers.
There are sales numbers that have to be met. There is the over whelming Quota number that we are judged on. We didn’t even create the quota number, we just have it assigned to us. And, it changes every year, and it doesn’t ever go down. Not even during a worldwide pandemic! Maybe in some situations during a pandemic the number may get altered, but as soon as management can change it back up, they will. This isn’t a degrade towards management, but just pointing out the machine that we are assigned to.
So what about this work-life balance?
Stay tuned, we’re getting closer!
